Out of Office, pt. 1

RMIT Project Space Narrm Melbourne Part 1: 26 August – 29 September 2016

Replicating our Te Atatū Peninsula studio in Melbourne, Public Share integrated its making and sharing focus into the gallery context. Alongside this studio, we installed a site tearoom that was used daily by the RMIT University community for work, teaching, meetings, seminars, lectures, artist talks, tea and lunch breaks. We also made tumblers from clay spoil collected from the Eastern Line level crossing removal project in Melbourne, which were used by 100 John Holland Group (JHG) workers during a morning tea at their site office/staffroom.

Public Share was invited by Aotearoa-based curator Zara Stanhope to develop a project at RMIT Project Space in Narrm Melbourne.

As a way of integrating the making and sharing focus of Public Share's practice into the gallery context, we transplanted our studio from Te Atatu Peninsula in Auckland to Carlton, Melbourne. For eight days, from 3 to 10 September 2016, Public Share was on-site (In Office) making tea tumblers from clay spoil collected from the John Holland site, which was part of the Eastern Line level-crossing removal project in Melbourne. These tumblers were available for use within the social conversation space (aka site tearoom) created in the gallery. Participants were also invited to take their selected tumbler home after using it on site.

Throughout the exhibition, including when Public Share was not on site, the space was used by interested parties for breaks, meetings and conversation. There was an open invitation to various groups, including student groups and union bodies, to make use of the social conversation space for meetings, classes and talks. In a sense the Out of Office installation operated as a facility, inviting exchange, and pivoting on ideas of the break, pause, rest and recuperation. Project Space became an active and experimental site for the duration of the Out of Office Project.

A linked second event Out of Office, pt.2 occurred on Friday 23 September 2016.
